INTRODUCTION

Wigan Golf Club has a friendly and popular junior section consisting of both boys and girls with a mixture of ages ranging from 6 to 17. The golf season starts around Easter offering competitions and free coaching which continues through to mid-October and concludes with an end of season presentation for all the family to enjoy. 

COMPETITIONS & HANDICAPS

Competitions are aimed at all abilities of juniors and held most weekends on Sundays which are played over 6, 9 or 18 holes. When juniors have gained a CONGU handicap, they are encouraged to play in the 18 hole competitions which can be Stablefords, Medals, Texas Scrambles, Matchplay Knockouts or team events both at home or away, and any junior new to the game or still learning can join in the 9 or 6 hole fun competitions which is a great way to get into golf without any pressure. Fun competitions mean fun rules allowing juniors to get the best out of the sport and have a great time!

At Wigan Golf Club, parents and carers are encouraged to support their children and sometimes get the opportunity to play with the juniors in fun competitions which in the past, has resulted in creating a great atmosphere in the section and the clubhouse with the whole families getting to know each other and building friendships both on and off the course.

COACHING

FREE weekly coaching is available with our teaching professional, Tony Byrom from Arley Academy. Tony is a massive hit with the juniors and are always keen to come back week after week to join in. As a beginner, you do not need clubs as Tony has equipment to use but when you are ready to hit the course, we do ask that all juniors have their own golf clubs and bag.

SAFEGUARDING

Wigan Golf Club take Safeguarding of Children and Young People seriously and have ensured that all the organisers, coach and volunteers have attended safeguarding courses and all are DBS cleared. Please click the Safeguarding link below to read our policy and procedures for this.

MEMBERSHIP

Junior membership starts at £70 for children aged 6-12 and £120 for 13-17 years of age. If you would like to join, please fill in the  Application Form or contact the office if you have any questions, the Junior Organiser is always happy to help.

"My son, Thomas, joined Wigan Golf Club in 2016 when he was 8 years old and he’s absolutely loving his time here as a member. The Junior Committee are so passionate about encouraging children of all ages and abilities to play golf and have fun with it. From free weekly coaching with Tony, who is absolutely brilliant with the kids (and extremely patient!), to fun competitions throughout the year and the chance to play at other golf courses too – they’ve really helped to make this an enjoyable hobby for Thomas.

The competitions are a favourite for Thomas – they’re all designed to help develop skills but to also feel fun, challenging and to present new experiences where friendships are made and strengthened. Thomas started with the short 6 hole fun competitions for new starters, progressed to the 9 hole competitions and he now has a CONGU handicap and plays in the 18 hole competitions. I think his favourites are the team competitions where boys and girls of all ages and abilities from the Junior Section (and their parents) represent Wigan Golf Club at others courses; last year there were visits to Haydock, West Lancs and Leigh Golf Clubs.
