Welcome to Our New Junior Website!Dear Junior Members,
Welcome to the Autumn Newsletter of the season, I hope like me that you are all looking forward to the new season. Enclosed is a brief overview of what’s in store this season plus an update of the events so far.
New Junior Captain and the Xmas competition.
Our 2009 Junior Captain, Scott Henderson, was enrolled at the Xmas competition and lunch on Sunday 28th December. Also elected that day was the Junior Captain elect, Brad Gregson, whom we are sure will not only be an asset to Scott and the Junior section but also to the Golf club. We wish you both an enjoyable and successful year.
We also played our Xmas competition on the day and despite freezing temperatures we had a very good turn out both for the golf and with the Juniors families at the Lunch afterwards. Ross Gregson won his first ever competition and received his prize from The Captain of the golf club – Ian Pinkerton. In fact both the Captain and the Lady Captain and their respective partners joined us for lunch and complemented the juniors for the way that they conducted themselves during the presentation.
2009 Season – The story so far
In February, we had the Junior Captains stableford competition, again a good turn out who played in tricky conditions. But we had some fabulous scores but nobody got anywhere near Sam France whose winter training paid off with a massive 48 points. During the recent Easter break the team played against Haigh Hall Juniors(see Team Junior section) and played our Easter Stableford competition- another good turn out provided some excellent scores and the good weather produced some very good scores- Phil Dawson’s score of 43 points won the day with good showings from Sam France and Nicky Sutch.
New Team Junior Addition
The team would like to welcome our latest team member – Mr Chris Eccles. Chris has been a member since 1990 and is currently head of the handicap committee. His son Matthew is also a member and we are delighted that Chris will look to assist the section on moving forward in the right direction. He has already suggested that we will implement a new handicap system that will mean that all future junior handicaps will start at 54. Chris and the team will also be implementing the Junior Golf Passport program once the lessons start again at the club. The team would like to thank him for his efforts so far and wish him well in both his roles at the club throughout the season.
Up and Coming Fixtures and Competitions
We have enclosed a Competition and Events sheets – please ensure that you pass the extra copy on to your parents. As you can see we have got a busy schedule for the summer with plenty of competitions and team events so get its time to get working on your game.
Next competition is the Junior Spring Trophy, which will be played onSunday 3rd May, with the tee reserved from 9.30am. Please ensure that you are there at least 30 minutes before the first tee time to enable the organisers to choose the order of play.
Junior Lessons.
Lessons at the golf club will commence on Tuesday 12th May starting at 6.15pm. The lessons will run until 8.00 p.m. and are available to Junior members, brothers and sisters of junior members and children and grandchildren of members that also wish to try golf. We will be running the Junior golf passport scheme this season, which we hope will enable all of the attendees to enjoy and learn about the game of golf. We will also be running 6 hole competitions on Tuesday evenings to compliment the lessons so if you feel that you need the practice or just want to work on your game then come to the lessons sessions and we will work out a routine for you.
Your Assistance Please!!!
We have a request for you all to assist the club in keeping you up to date with what’s happening at Wigan golf Club, so we are asking you all to supply an email address for you and for your parents. It will enable us to provide you with information about events at our club, but also other competitions both locally and nationally that you might be interested in. It will also ensure that you receive newsletters and competition results online and we are looking at putting lesson based activities for you to download. That said it will only work with your help so please send your details to HYPERLINK info@wigangolfclub.co.uk Reference Junior Email Request.
Team Junior
Our first event this Easter was a home fixture against Haigh Hall Juniors, who brought a very strong team. The standard of golf was extremely good for so early in the season with Wigan winning 6v4. Congratulations to Ross Gregson, Jake Borrows and Mike Cheethamon winning on their first appearances in the team.
The next event will be our match against St Annes Old Links, this is an away fixture were you will play and then dine with your opponents. If you are available and would like to play then please ensure that you put your details on the team sheet on the Junior notice board. We will contact you near the time with the travel arrangements both to and from St Annes.
If your parents want to discuss any of the events, competitions or lessons, then please do not hesitate to contact Steve McDonald on 01257 424194 or 07800 693636.
We look forward to seeing you all soon
