September 2007 - JUNIOR NEWSLETTER
Dear Junior Members,
Welcome to the latest update from Wigan Golf Club. In this edition, you will find who won what, who played well and the nearly if only since our last newsletter in July. Also in this addition you will find an update on the Junior Victory trophy Competition, the latest golf lessons session begins at Haigh PGA centre and a request for the return of the photograph permission form. We are also looking to put a team together for the Juniors v Ladies match Competitions.
The summer was a busy period with The Junior Scratch Cup, The Daily Telegraph Junior Championship, Round three of the Junior Organisers Challenge Cup and who can forget that we hosted the Junior Victory Trophy.
So what happened, who won and what was the weather like…? On the last point it did at last stop raining and you produced some magnificent golf. The Junior scratch cup was won by the Junior Captain Chris Lyon with a score of 69, Chris beat of a late challenge from David Johnson to retain the title, the Nett prize was equally exciting with four players battling it out but with a score of 62 Phil Dawson beat the quality field. In the Daily Telegraph championship, David Johnson took revenue for missing out on the Scratch Cup by winning the competition with a gross score of 76, a great score considering the conditions on the day and in the third round of the Junior organisers trophy Phil Dawson who scored a fantastic 77 Gross 62 nett to win round three.
- Junior Victory Trophy – Friday 10th August 2007
This event was hosted by Wigan Golf Club this year and if I may say I thought that every one that was involved made it a very memorable day for all of the visiting teams. The course was in first class condition and a big thank you to the greens committee for liaising with the green staff. Our thanks also must go to all of the ball spotters for their assistance throughout the day on what was a thankless task. Thank you to House for arranging the Car parking marshals and a big thank you to the steward, stewardess and the catering staff who pulled out all the stops especially at lunch time to ensure players and caddies were fed, water and turned round in their allotted time. A big thank you also for our reserves who had to stand in at the last minute due to injuries to some of our nominated players.
On the course the team played very well and finished third overall in the main competition. Chris Lyon defended his title magnificently, shooting the lowest gross score over the two rounds only to lose the title on a card count back. Well done Chris and well done team.
There were some hard lessons learnt on the day for one of our players who shot a great score of 62 in the morning round. Unfortunately his playing partner put down the wrong score on one hole which meant that our player was disqualified. The lesson form this is that we must all be responsible for checking the score cards before submitting them into the competition. This means you must check the scores hole by hole with your playing partners, if you don’t then you will find that rules state that you are to be disqualified from the competition if the scores are incorrect. So please check your cards before handing them in!!
Junior website update
The Clubs website has now been upgraded and on it you will find our own section. If you don’t already have the clubs website on your computer then please add it to your favourites the address is www.wigangolfclub.co.uk
In the section you will be able to see result sections, what is going on at the club when all our competitions are and enjoy the links to the English Golf union and its very enjoyable magazine “ The Bunker”. We have also included a parent’s information section which helps them understand the game, its rules and the protection that is in place for the juniors. Please ensure you share this information with them and show them around the site.
In our last newsletter I sent you a photograph permission form for your parents/ guardians to complete. This will enable us to take photographs of you when you are playing on the course as we have designed a player profile section and we would like to have your photograph on the website. If you haven’t already completed this form then please return it as soon as possible, if you have lost it then please go to the website and download the forms. They can be found in the parent’s information section.
Junior Golf team wear Have you order your team shirt yet? If the answer is no then why not ask for it for Christmas or your Birthday! The cost of the shirt is £11.99 and the cap is £5.99, the order form is also available on the website.
